Repair and handover FAQ · Prices and services

Repair, upgrade or replacement?

Is repairing an older PC or laptop worthwhile?

Age alone does not decide. Condition, intended use, support from current software and the actual repair work all matter. After diagnosis, I discuss whether repair or upgrading makes sense. I do not use a fixed age limit or a blanket percentage rule.

When is upgrading better than buying a new device?

An upgrade is especially useful when the device is in good condition and a particular bottleneck is the problem. An SSD improves access times; more RAM can help with several open applications. The processor, software support and cooling impose limits. Consider repair costs, parts and the intended remaining period of use together.

What can an SSD upgrade improve in everyday use?

Replacing a mechanical hard drive with a suitable SSD can shorten startup times and make programs open faster. An SSD does not fix every cause of a slow device. I assess a suitable solution; installation, the component and any requested data migration are separate services.

Can every laptop have its RAM upgraded?

No. Depending on the model, memory is replaceable, partly soldered or entirely fixed. The exact model name is therefore important. Before an upgrade, I check whether expansion is possible and useful for your requirements.

Is repairing an older games console worthwhile?

It depends on the model, condition, fault and how you intend to use it. A blanket amount does not reliably determine the value of repair. After assessment, we discuss the work and options; you then approve the work.

How long does a desktop PC usually last?

A desktop PC has no fixed expiry date. Dust, heat, power-supply quality and daily workload affect lifespan; individual components can fail before the whole system. Sufficient performance and supported software matter for continued use, not just its year of manufacture.

Is a seven-year-old PC still useful?

It may still be sufficient for office work, browsing and basic photo management. An SSD and sufficient RAM can improve everyday usability. Current games, demanding video editing or missing support for the desired operating system may make a newer system more sensible.

When is a computer definitely too old?

It is too old for its purpose when required programs no longer run usefully, necessary security updates are unavailable or essential repairs and upgrades are uneconomic. A working device need not automatically be discarded; another less demanding use may remain possible.

Can a PC last twenty years?

Yes, some still work after twenty years. That does not mean they suit current programs and safe internet use. Old power supplies, drives and absent software support deserve particular attention. Historical applications have different requirements from everyday online use.

Why can a custom-built PC be better than a prebuilt one?

Individual component selection can target performance, cooling and future upgrades; standard parts can simplify repair. A prebuilt PC can still be suitable. Proprietary connectors, restricted space and hard-to-replace special parts are potential drawbacks. The actual equipment matters, not the label.

What should I do with an old PC I no longer need?

A usable PC can be passed on or used for simpler tasks. Before transfer, consider personal data and stored accounts; merely deleting individual files is not always enough. Unusable devices belong in appropriate electronics collection, not household waste.

What should I do with an old laptop that cannot be repaired?

Even when repair is uneconomic, its data may still matter. Before disposal or transfer, establish whether files can be backed up and how the drive should be handled. Use appropriate electronics collection; damaged batteries need safe, separate handling.

Is a refurbished business laptop better than a cheap new one?

A well-tested business laptop can offer a sturdier case, better keyboard and easier maintenance. An ageing battery, older connections and limited software support can count against it. Compare processor, RAM, SSD, battery, display and warranty terms rather than original price alone.

How long does a games console usually last?

A console can remain useful for many years, but has no guaranteed lifespan. Cooling, dust, operating hours and mechanical stress influence condition. Game availability and online services can also limit use even when the hardware works. One fault does not automatically end the entire console's life.

How should faulty PC parts and batteries be disposed of responsibly?

Use designated collection or return points for electronics and batteries. Consider personal information on storage devices first. Swollen or damaged batteries must not be crushed, opened or transported unprotected with other objects; inform the collection point about their condition.

What does refurbished mean for IT equipment?

It means a used device has been prepared for resale. Scope and quality vary: cleaning, testing, replacement parts and battery condition are not automatically the same everywhere. Look for a clear condition description and information on specification, battery and statutory rights or any additional warranty.

What is the right to repair?

It covers rules intended to make repairs easier and encourage longer use of certain products. EU rules create manufacturer obligations for covered product groups under specified conditions. They do not create a universal right to every PC repair, free repairs or indefinitely available parts. Whether a device is covered needs checking against applicable rules.

How can I judge whether a used PC is worth its price?

Consider exact processor and graphics-card models, RAM, storage, condition and suitability for your programs. An old flagship processor is not automatically better than a newer mid-range one. Include power supply, cooling, upgrade options and software support; necessary repairs can quickly offset a low purchase price.

What if repairing a PC costs more than its current value?

Resale value is not the only criterion. Repair may still be worthwhile if the device suits your work and replacement plus setup costs much more. Multiple faults, missing software support or likely further costs can favour replacement. Valuable data is considered separately.

Heat, noise and maintenance

Why can a hot device become slower?

Many processors reduce performance at high temperatures to remain within their intended limits. This is called thermal throttling. Heat alone does not prove a particular fault. Unusual performance loss or shutdowns warrant assessment.

When should thermal paste be professionally checked or replaced?

As a guide for professional maintenance, I recommend inspection and replacement where appropriate about every two to three years. Usage, model and thermal material can make a different interval sensible. Ageing material can impair heat transfer; unusual temperatures warrant earlier assessment. Replacement belongs to professional maintenance.

Does a cooling pad replace laptop maintenance?

A cooling pad does not replace internal cleaning and cooling-system maintenance. In my workshop experience, its additional airflow can accelerate the accumulation of dust and textile fibres inside, particularly when cooling fins are already partly blocked. This can lead to higher temperatures over time.

Why should a laptop stand on a firm, level surface?

Soft surfaces such as blankets, cushions or carpets can cover ventilation openings. A firm, level surface helps keep the intended airflow paths clear. This does not replace maintenance of an already dirty or malfunctioning cooling system.

Does a loud fan always mean dirt buildup?

No. High workloads can also increase fan speed. Dust, ageing thermal material or a damaged fan are other possible causes. Persistent unusual noise, scraping or rattling should be assessed rather than attributed to one cause without diagnosis.

Should I blow compressed air into an overheating device myself?

I do not recommend DIY internal cleaning using compressed air or improvised tools. It cannot reliably establish the condition of the cooling system, and improper use can cause damage. For overheating, we first establish the model and symptoms and agree professional assessment or cleaning.

Is thermal paste the right thermal material for every device?

No. Different models use materials including thermal paste, thermal putty or liquid metal. These are not freely interchangeable. During professional maintenance, the material is selected to suit the device and agreed work.

What temperature can a CPU reach under load?

There is no universal limit. Allowable temperatures depend on the model and system construction, with limits specified by manufacturers. Brief peaks and sustained overheating differ. New performance drops or shutdowns during the usual workload are particularly relevant.

Why does the laptop fan constantly run at maximum speed?

Background tasks, high room temperature or impaired cooling can cause it. Poor transfer from chip to heatsink can also keep a fan fast. Whether it is a new change and accompanies performance loss matters. Noise alone does not identify the affected component.

How much space does a PS5 or Xbox Series X need around it?

Follow the instructions for the particular console. Clear intake and exhaust openings and adequate circulation are important; a confined closed TV compartment can trap heat. Wall clearance should match manufacturer instructions. One distance for every PlayStation and Xbox would be unreliable.

Does an external console fan help?

It replaces neither clear airflow nor professional internal maintenance. Any benefit depends on design and placement. Accessories covering openings or changing intended airflow can be counterproductive. New noise or shutdowns call for assessment of the cause inside the device.

Can a vacuum cleaner remove dust from inside a console?

It does not reliably reach internal cooling surfaces or replace internal cleaning. Mechanical stress and electrostatic effects can be problematic at sensitive openings. Removing visible dust does not prove that the internal fan and heatsink are clear. I recommend professional internal maintenance.

Why does my laptop become extremely hot so quickly?

Heavy workload can heat it rapidly. Unusual heat during light tasks may involve blocked airflow, dust, fan trouble or impaired heat transfer; intensive background tasks can also cause it. Changes from previous behaviour and accompanying symptoms matter. A hot spot alone does not confirm a particular damaged component.

What symptoms can indicate laptop overheating?

Persistently fast fans, new performance drops under load, temperature warnings or shutdowns are clues. The device may also feel warmer than before. These are not exclusive to overheating; power faults can also cause shutdowns. Assess them alongside model and usage. Deliberate additional stress testing is not required.

Why does the laptop fan scrape or rattle?

Worn bearings, blade contact or loose parts can cause it, unlike smooth airflow noise. Impaired airflow can reduce cooling. Do not stop it with objects or open the device speculatively. Persistent noise warrants professional assessment.

When should abnormal laptop temperatures be professionally assessed?

When it becomes hotter under the same usage, stays unusually loud or loses performance. Warnings and recurring shutdowns also merit checks; one threshold for every model is unreliable. Burning smells, smoke or a swollen case are urgent: stop use and charging; contact emergency services for smoke or fire.

PC and laptop: startup, display and hardware

Why does my laptop crack or become difficult to open?

Stiff hinges can place high forces on their mountings. Cracking or new gaps can indicate loose or broken supports. Forcing the lid further can also damage the frame and display cable. Whether the hinge, mounting or casing is affected determines the repair work.

What can a flickering image during laptop lid movement mean?

In many laptops, the display cable passes through the hinge area. A damaged cable or unstable connection can cause flickering during ordinary lid movement; the panel or other components can also be involved. This observation is useful, but is not an instruction to move the lid repeatedly for testing.

Why does my laptop charge intermittently or only with the plug in a particular position?

A broken cable, worn charging socket or loose contacts can cause position-dependent power delivery. Charger identification can also fail. Depending on the model, the socket is connected separately or attached to the board. A particular plug position is not a lasting solution; pressure and repeated bending can worsen damage.

Why does my gaming PC or laptop switch off while playing?

Gaming increases demands on graphics, processor and power delivery. Cooling or power-supply problems can become apparent under that load; unstable components can also cause shutdowns. Whether the device switches off, restarts or displays an error matters. Further deliberate load tests are not sensible when shutdowns recur.

Does a blue screen automatically mean a hardware fault?

No. Software, drivers, storage and other hardware can be involved. An existing error code or photo of the message helps interpretation. Drivers, the registry or BIOS should not be changed on suspicion alone.

What does it mean if a computer will not start after an update?

An update can change drivers or system components, but a deteriorating drive can also become noticeable during it. Whether the device reaches the manufacturer logo, Windows sign-in or a particular error helps distinguish causes. Reinstalling on suspicion can affect data and is not automatically the right solution.

Can a device still work at first after liquid damage?

Yes. Liquid can initially affect only some areas, while residue and corrosion cause later faults. Working temporarily does not prove the incident was harmless. Do not keep charging or testing it. The liquid type, time and affected areas help professional assessment; repair is not always possible.

What if my PC will not start at all?

If neither lights nor fans respond, power delivery, the power button or internal electronics may be involved. If it reacts but does not reach Windows, that is a different fault pattern. Do not keep switching it on after burning smells, liquid or unusual heat; bridging internal contacts is not a safe solution.

Why does my PC switch on but the screen stays black?

Running fans do not prove a complete startup. The display connection, graphics card, RAM or interrupted self-test may be involved. Whether the manufacturer logo is absent or the picture disappears only at Windows matters. A black screen alone does not justify replacing a display or graphics card.

What if a PC switches on and off again within seconds?

A protection function, power-supply fault, short circuit or cooling problem can cause this. Lights and exact shutdown timing also provide clues. Repeated startup attempts do not fix the cause and can add stress when electrical damage is present.

What if the PC power button is faulty?

The mechanical button, connection or underlying electronics may be responsible. A faulty button does not automatically mean a faulty motherboard. Workshop testing distinguishes the button, cable and power delivery; do not bridge contacts at home.

How is the cause of a sudden PC crash identified?

The time, application and existing messages help. Crashes only under load suggest different causes from failures immediately after startup. Professional diagnosis combines observations and existing logs with temperature, memory and power checks. One log entry is not a confirmed cause.

Why has my PC suddenly lost power?

If all indicators go out, the power supply, connection or a protection function may be involved. Active indicators can instead indicate a system crash. Burning smells, damaged cables and recurring shutdowns are warning signs. Repeated startup attempts or opening the power supply are unsuitable ways to investigate.

Can a power cut damage a PC?

A power cut can interrupt writes and lose unsaved work. Accompanying surges can damage hardware; not every outage destroys components. A suitable UPS can bridge brief interruptions, while a separate backup protects data. These measures serve different purposes.

What if my PC is stuck in a startup loop?

A loop can occur before the operating system or during Windows startup. Causes range from updates and drivers to unstable RAM or a faulty drive. The stage at which it repeats matters. Resetting or reinstalling on suspicion can affect data and is not a universal first step.

What if the motherboard shows no signs of life?

An apparently dead board can result from missing power or a protective shutdown. Conversely, a standby light does not prove all voltages are correct. Testing supply, startup control and board distinguishes causes; replacing a motherboard without that assessment may be unnecessary.

Why does the BIOS not detect the hard drive or SSD?

The drive, connection or interface may be responsible. Distinguish a physically detected drive from a missing bootable system. With valuable data, avoid formatting or speculative BIOS changes. Detection failure does not prove total data loss.

Why do PC fans run at full speed without a successful startup?

Full speed can occur before normal fan control is reached during startup; it does not automatically prove overheating. RAM, graphics, power or the startup self-test can be involved. Noise and missing picture are assessed together rather than treated as two confirmed faults.

What symptoms can indicate a graphics-card problem?

Artefacts, coloured blocks, crashes under graphics load or no picture can indicate a graphics problem. Drivers, display connections and power delivery can produce similar faults. Whether it appears before Windows or only in one application helps distinguish causes. The symptom alone does not confirm card damage.

What symptoms can indicate faulty RAM?

Unstable memory can cause varying crashes, startup problems or errors across applications; other components can cause similar behaviour. Changes following a RAM upgrade are particularly relevant. Suitable testing considers both modules and compatibility or memory control.

Must Windows be reinstalled after a motherboard replacement?

Not always. Chipset, drivers, startup configuration and activation may be affected. Hardware changes can also trigger a BitLocker key request. Data, encryption and licensing should therefore be addressed before replacement; a successful startup does not mean the transition is fully complete.

What options exist when a device stops starting after a BIOS update?

Depending on the model, manufacturer recovery or professional firmware work may be possible. Some devices have dedicated functions; others need board work. Wrong firmware or repeated flashing attempts can worsen matters. The exact model and failed update sequence are crucial; recovery is not always possible.

What can indicate an AIO liquid-cooling pump fault?

Temperatures can rise sharply despite running fans; changed pump noises are another clue. Air in the loop, poor heat transfer or other cooling issues can also cause problems. Visible fan movement does not prove pump operation. Further stress tests are unsuitable when overheating is apparent.

What can fan rattling or clattering mean?

Worn bearings, contact with the fan blades or loose parts can cause it. Ordinary airflow sounds different and usually changes more smoothly with speed. Increasing noise or reduced cooling warrants assessment. Do not stop a running fan with objects.

When is professional performance testing useful?

It is useful when programs slow markedly, games crash or performance drops under load. Temperature, memory usage and drive condition are assessed together to find the actual bottleneck rather than buy parts speculatively. Suspected liquid or electrical damage requires assessment before load testing.

What if the laptop display shows lines?

The panel, connection or graphics electronics may cause lines. Changes during ordinary lid movement are a useful signal-path clue; pressure or impact can damage the panel. Further bending or pressure can worsen damage.

Why should a cracked laptop display be professionally assessed?

Damage can affect the panel and, on touch models, touch detection as well as the surface. Further pressure can extend it. Replacement considers a suitable panel and frame or hinge damage. A similar-looking panel is not automatically compatible.

Why does a laptop display have bright or dark patches?

Bright pressure marks can result from mechanical stress or uneven lighting. Dark areas may involve panel damage or failed backlighting. Shape, development and origin help distinction. External cleaning cannot remove internal panel or lighting damage.

Why is the laptop picture extremely dim but faintly visible?

Backlighting or its supply may be affected; cable and panel faults are also possible. This differs from a computer generating no picture signal. Full panel replacement should not be decided without examining lighting and power.

How should I protect a laptop display during travel?

Use a padded bag and avoid pressure on the closed lid or objects between keyboard and screen. In my workshop experience, chargers, mice and other hard accessories should never be stored in a pocket directly against the display-lid side: external pressure can damage the panel even when closed. Use a separate compartment without lid pressure. Damaged or stiff hinges add risk that a bag cannot remedy.

Why do individual laptop keys stop working?

Wear, damaged mechanisms or earlier liquid damage can cause it. Entire failed groups can indicate an electrical connection problem. Some keyboards form part of the top case. The fault pattern and construction determine whether targeted repair or a larger replacement is appropriate.

Why have laptop USB ports stopped working?

One damaged socket differs from failure of all ports. Socket, power, attached device and system may be involved. Stop using visibly deformed or overheating connections. Force or improvised contact adjustments can damage the board.

What if a laptop speaker sounds scratchy?

A damaged speaker, loose parts or disturbed audio signal may cause it. Faults only with certain files may not involve the speaker. Impact or liquid increases suspicion of hardware damage. Turning up the volume for testing can further stress an affected speaker.

When is professional RAM testing useful?

Recurring varying crashes, startup problems or instability after upgrading are reasons. Assessment considers modules, slots, compatibility and memory control. A memory-related blue screen does not alone prove a damaged module. Distinguish genuine memory faults from driver or other causes before replacing parts.

Upgrades and compatibility

Can RAM modules from different manufacturers be combined?

Sometimes, but matching capacity or speed alone does not guarantee compatibility. Generation, voltage, module design and motherboard or processor support must match. Mixed modules may operate with reduced settings or instability. Suitable matching modules generally provide a better basis for a reliable upgrade.

When is a graphics-card upgrade worthwhile?

Especially when games or graphics-intensive applications are limited by the existing card. Processor, power supply, space and cooling must support it. An expensive card is often not the first sensible upgrade for office work and does not fix unrelated system faults.

What power supply does a new graphics card need?

Consider graphics and processor demand, other components and brief power spikes. Connectors, quality and manufacturer requirements matter too. The wattage label alone is insufficient. Adapters and existing modular cables must not be freely exchanged between power supplies.

What is the difference between SATA SSDs and NVMe M.2 SSDs?

SATA and NVMe differ in drive communication. SATA SSDs often replace conventional 2.5-inch hard drives; NVMe uses PCIe and can provide higher performance, especially for large transfers. M.2 describes the form factor: M.2 SATA SSDs also exist. An M.2 slot does not guarantee NVMe support.

Why does exact hardware specification matter for an upgrade?

Processor, motherboard, RAM type, power supply and connections determine options. Laptop components can be soldered or physically constrained. Exact model and existing specification prevent unsuitable purchases. An upgrade must fit use: more storage differs from more RAM or graphics performance.

What do additional case fans achieve?

They can remove warm air more effectively when inlets, outlets and paths work together. More fans do not automatically improve cooling; poor placement can mainly increase noise and dust. They do not reliably fix a blocked heatsink or poor heat transfer.

What does 80 PLUS certification mean for a power supply?

It describes electrical efficiency under defined test conditions. It is not a complete quality or safety certification and does not alone establish suitability for a graphics card. Protection functions, electrical stability, connectors and construction also matter. An efficient supply can still be incorrectly sized.

What is the advantage of a modular power supply?

Unused cables can be omitted, simplifying cable organisation and work inside the case. Modular does not automatically mean higher quality. Power-supply-side cables are not universal: similar connectors can have different pin assignments on other models.

What is an airflow case and why does it matter?

It provides openings and paths that restrict intake and exhaust less. This particularly benefits powerful components whose heat must leave the case. Fan arrangement and regular professional care remain important. An open design is not automatically dust-resistant or quiet.

How do matte and glossy laptop displays differ?

Matte surfaces reduce visible reflections; glossy screens can look contrast-rich under suitable lighting but reflect more. The best choice depends on workplace and use. Replacement also requires matching connectors, size, resolution and mounting, not only surface finish.

Can a laptop Wi-Fi card be upgraded?

Some are replaceable, others integrated. Slot, electrical connection, antennas and manufacturer support determine options. A newer card needs a suitable router and environment to deliver the expected benefit. It does not automatically fix disconnections caused by weak signal or interference.

How can I find out whether laptop RAM is upgradeable?

Usually from the exact model and manufacturer documentation. Available and occupied slots, supported memory type and maximum capacity matter. Some laptops have fully soldered memory; others have an additional slot. Configurations within one model family can differ. Opening the case is unnecessary for this initial check.

Can laptop graphics be upgraded?

In most laptops the chip is fixed to the motherboard, unlike a replaceable desktop card. Rare modular systems are exceptions. External graphics requires suitable connectivity and support and is not always economical. A more powerful chip therefore cannot generally be retrofitted.

What needs agreeing before moving a system to a new SSD?

Data quantity, source-drive condition, target capacity and required scope matter. Full migration differs from reinstallation and file backup. Encryption and licensing may require preparation. A faulty system or deteriorating drive cannot always be transferred without difficulty.

Can a laptop CPU be replaced?

Most newer laptop processors are soldered rather than ordinary upgrade parts. Older or specialist models may use sockets, but firmware, power and cooling must support a replacement. Technically possible replacement is not automatically a worthwhile performance upgrade.

Why is my laptop slower on battery than on its charger?

Many laptops limit power on battery to manage runtime and heat, especially noticeable in games or intensive tasks. An ageing battery or unsuitable charger can add limitations. A moderate difference is often normal; a sudden major reduction compared with previous behaviour warrants assessment.

What professional work can help a slow old laptop?

An SSD can improve slow hard-drive access; more RAM helps when memory is genuinely insufficient. Maintenance can address temperature-related slowdown. Software or drive faults require other measures. Condition and bottleneck are assessed before upgrading rather than treating every slow device identically.

Battery, charging and power

Why does my laptop battery no longer charge?

Battery ageing, charger, socket or charging electronics may be responsible. A manufacturer charge limit can also prevent the percentage rising on mains power. Swelling, severe heat or burning smells are a different urgent pattern. The battery icon alone cannot determine which part needs replacing.

What does “Plugged in, not charging” mean?

A charge limit may have been reached, the charger may not be recognised sufficiently or the battery may not charge correctly. Some devices deliberately limit charge to protect it. New behaviour or an empty battery warrants assessment of the charger and battery together.

How long does a laptop battery usually last?

Cycles, heat, cell quality and age affect life. Wear generally reduces capacity and runtime. No fixed number of years applies to every device. Sudden runtime loss or shutdown can indicate something different from gradual normal ageing.

What can indicate a swollen laptop battery?

A bulging base, raised touchpad or new gaps can be clues. Stop using and charging it; do not press, open or puncture the battery. Agree safe handling and transport with a professional. Smoke or fire requires local emergency services.

Can a laptop run on its charger without a battery?

Some can, while others require the battery for particular operating states. Design and manufacturer requirements decide. This is not an instruction to remove a fixed or damaged battery yourself. A faulty battery should not simply remain in use because the device still starts on mains power.

Should a laptop battery always stay at 100 percent?

High charge combined with heat can accelerate lithium-ion ageing. Many manufacturers offer charge limits for frequent mains use; availability depends on the model. Repeated complete discharge is not a sensible general care recommendation either.

Can a laptop charge through USB-C?

Only if that port supports charging. Charger and cable must provide the suitable charging method and sufficient power. Identical connector shape does not guarantee compatibility. An underpowered charger may charge slowly or fail to prevent discharge while the device runs.

Which replacement charger should I buy for a laptop?

Match required voltage, sufficient power, connection and any required device communication. USB-C charging profiles and cable must also fit. A mechanically fitting plug is insufficient. Traceable origin and suitable specification matter more than the lowest price.

Why does a laptop suddenly switch off on battery?

A worn battery can fail to maintain voltage under load despite reported remaining charge. Contacts, charging electronics or an inaccurate charge indicator can also contribute. Reliable mains operation is a clue, not complete proof of battery failure.

How can laptop battery runtime be improved?

Brightness, wireless use and demanding applications affect runtime, as do battery condition and heat. Power saving cannot make a worn battery new again. Aim for a suitable balance; distinguish unusually short runtime or sudden shutdowns from normal higher consumption.

Why is my laptop's original charger no longer recognised?

Some laptops identify the charger as well as its voltage and power. Cable, plug or socket faults can interrupt identification while some power still reaches the device, limiting charge or performance. Original accessories are not automatically fault-free simply because they belong to the device.

Can the wrong charger damage a laptop?

Yes. Wrong voltage, pin assignment or poor quality can cause damage. Insufficient power can cause charging problems or performance limits. With USB-C, device, charger and cable must match. A fitting plug is not sufficient approval.

Why do some USB-C cables become extremely hot?

Heavy load, poor contact or damaged or unsuitable cables can cause heating. Severe heat, discolouration or burning smells are not normal. Stop using that cable; socket and charger may also be involved. A higher printed rating does not itself prove safe capacity.

Is a UPS worthwhile for a PC?

A suitable UPS can bridge brief interruptions and allow an orderly shutdown, particularly useful for important ongoing work. Runtime and output must fit the connected system. It replaces neither a separate backup nor protection against every electrical fault.

What risks do cheap unbranded power supplies present?

Poor voltage stability, protection or isolation can cause device faults and safety risks. A familiar logo or efficiency rating alone still does not establish suitability. Reliable origin, suitable specification and professional selection matter.

Why must a PC power supply not be opened at home?

Dangerous voltage can remain inside after disconnection. Its enclosure also protects against contact with electrical parts. It is unsuitable for home repair attempts. A faulty supply is professionally assessed and replaced with a suitable one if necessary.

Does rice really help wet electronics?

It neither removes residues nor fixes corrosion or electrical damage. An apparently dried device can remain affected inside. Switching on or charging to test can cause further damage. Prompt professional assessment and important data matter more than a home remedy.

PlayStation and Xbox

Why is my console much louder than before?

Workload, airflow paths and cooling-system condition affect noise. Dirt or problems with the fan or thermal material can also contribute. I assess the appropriate work; cleaning is not a universal solution for every fault.

Does “No signal” on a console always mean a faulty HDMI port?

No. The HDMI cable, display input, signal processing or an incomplete console startup can produce the same result. A damaged socket is a clue, but not every missing picture needs port replacement. Indicator lights, sound and the exact model help distinguish startup and picture-output problems.

Why does a console switch off in the middle of a game?

Cooling, power delivery or other component problems can cause this. Time until shutdown and any existing messages help diagnosis. Please do not deliberately reproduce the fault with further gaming or stress tests.

What should I consider when positioning a console?

Keep the intended ventilation openings clear. A confined, closed compartment can restrict circulation. Follow the positioning instructions for the specific model; one general distance does not suit every console and environment.

When is professional console cleaning useful?

Use, location, dust exposure and unusual changes matter more than a rigid interval. If a console becomes unusually loud, heats up abnormally or switches off, the cause should be assessed. For Xbox and PlayStation, we agree the model and suitable cleaning work beforehand.

How does thermal-material servicing differ between PS5 and PS4?

The published premium cleaning includes thermal-paste replacement for PS4 and Xbox. For PS5, liquid-metal servicing including replacement forms part of the agreed work. The material is handled appropriately for the model; I do not recommend DIY opening or servicing.

Why does a PS4 or PS5 drive no longer read games or Blu-rays?

A damaged or dirty disc, mechanics or optical reading may be involved. Whether one or several discs fail, and whether loading and ejecting work, matters. A reading fault does not automatically mean the whole console is defective. Do not open the drive yourself.

Why does my PS4 eject discs by itself?

The eject sensor or button, drive control or mechanics may be involved. Designs differ between PS4 models. Repeated reinsertion does not fix the cause. Exact model and whether it also occurs without a disc help interpretation.

Why does my Xbox Series X or S switch off within seconds?

Power, protection functions or internal faults can cause early shutdown. Shutdown after lengthy gameplay is a different pattern. Exact model and sequence matter; short runtime does not alone confirm power-supply failure. Avoid repeated starts with unusual heat or burning smells.

Why does an Xbox Series X click or scrape?

Depending on operating state, the drive, fan or loose parts may cause it. Noise only with a disc differs from noise throughout operation. Noise with shutdowns or increasing heat deserves particular attention. Do not open the console to locate it yourself.

Why does my Xbox no longer take in discs?

Loading rollers, sensors or drive mechanics can prevent insertion. A disc already inside or damaged media also matters. Forcing insertion can worsen damage. Loading, ejecting and detection are assessed together before deciding on parts.

Can PS5 liquid metal leak when the console stands vertically?

With the appropriate model-specific supports or stand, PS5 is designed for horizontal and vertical positioning. Vertical position alone therefore does not prove leakage. Damaged cooling assemblies or improper earlier work require individual assessment. Liquid metal conducts electricity and belongs in skilled hands. For overheating or shutdowns, cooling-system assessment is more useful than automatically blaming orientation.

Windows and system problems

Can Windows problems be professionally fixed without reinstalling?

Yes, some can be corrected selectively; others merit reinstallation, for example extensive system damage. Cause and condition matter, not just the message. Data transfer, programs and licences are addressed before the agreed work.

Are all files lost when Windows is reinstalled?

It depends on installation method and treatment of the existing drive. Reinstallation is not a backup and does not automatically transfer programs. Even file-retention options do not guarantee against all loss. Important files and required transfer scope must be addressed separately beforehand.

How do shutting down and restarting differ?

Restarting reloads Windows. Fast startup can preserve parts of system state for the next startup after shutdown. The two can therefore affect temporary software issues differently. Restarting does not fix damaged hardware or replace diagnosis for recurring faults.

What does “No boot device found” mean?

No suitable bootable system was found. An undetected drive, damaged boot data or a drive fault may be responsible. It does not prove all files have vanished. Protecting important data and checking the drive take priority over reinstalling or formatting.

What if disk activity stays at 100 percent?

This indicates activity, not occupied capacity. Many small accesses, background work, insufficient RAM or a problematic drive may contribute. Mechanical drives reach the limit more easily than suitable SSDs. Persistent activity does not alone confirm failure or justify deleting system files.

Does Windows need reactivation after hardware replacement?

Not every change requires it, but motherboard replacement may count as significant. Continued use depends on licence type and existing association. Activation and technical operation are separate: an existing installation does not automatically imply a transferable licence.

What can cause slow Windows startup?

Startup applications, slow or faulty hard drives, updates and insufficient RAM may contribute. Delay before Windows differs from delay after signing in. An SSD improves storage access but does not fix every software issue. Find the cause rather than disable needed functions indiscriminately.

Are system cleaners such as CCleaner worthwhile?

A cleaner is not a necessary solution for every slow Windows system. Automatic registry cleaning or aggressive deletion can cause extra problems. Temporary files and genuine hardware bottlenecks differ. Targeted assessment is more useful than promises that one optimiser speeds up every PC.

What options exist for persistently low space on drive C:?

Programs, personal files, temporary data and system components consume different areas. Insufficient free space can impair updates and operation. Establish needed data and whether a larger SSD is sensible before cleanup. Do not delete unfamiliar Windows folders or hidden files merely because they are large.

Why should an SSD not be manually defragmented?

It has no mechanical seek movement, so traditional defragmentation does not offer the same benefit. Windows handles supported SSDs according to their technology during optimisation, including TRIM. Speculative manual defragmentation tools are not sensible general care. Built-in optimisation is not simply equivalent to HDD defragmentation.

What does the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT stop error mean?

Windows detected a serious memory-management fault. Unstable RAM, a driver or another disturbance may be responsible. The code alone does not prove a damaged RAM module. Timing, recurrence and further diagnostic results determine interpretation.

What does INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE mean?

Windows cannot access the drive required for startup. Drivers, startup configuration or drive problems may contribute. A fault after a system or hardware change differs from a sudden failure without changes. Do not format or reinstall speculatively when important data is involved.

Data, backup and BitLocker

Is cloud synchronisation the same as a backup?

Not automatically. Synchronisation can also spread unwanted changes or deletions to other devices. Some services additionally offer versions or recovery functions; their scope needs checking. For important data, I recommend a planned backup and an independent external copy.

Why should the backup drive not stay connected permanently?

A permanently connected backup can also be affected by malware or other faults. I recommend safely disconnecting external backup storage after completion and storing it separately. This reduces shared risks but does not provide complete protection against every kind of damage.

How often should I back up important data?

Often enough that losing changes since the last backup would be acceptable to you. Someone changing important files daily needs a different schedule from someone making rare changes. An additional separate copy and, where appropriate, a suitable cloud service can supplement the backup.

What does a request to format a drive mean?

Windows may be unable to read the file system because of damaged structures, an unsupported format or a drive fault. It does not mean the drive is empty. If its files matter, do not confirm formatting or use repair programs on suspicion; first consider its condition and available backups.

What options exist for accidentally deleted files?

Possibility depends on storage, writes since deletion and backups. SSD TRIM and other processes can severely restrict recovery. Installing tools or attempting recovery on the same drive can overwrite remaining data. Success cannot be promised; backups and actual condition are considered first.

What backup should be discussed before laptop repair?

Discuss important files and any existing backup. Hardware repair does not automatically include a backup. Separate backup may sometimes remain possible on a non-starting device. Backing up accessible data and recovering already lost data are different services.

Why does a USB drive not appear on my PC?

Connection, power, file system or its electronics may fail. An absent drive is not automatically empty. If the fault is sudden and files matter, do not accept formatting. Data and condition matter more than making it quickly usable as empty storage.

Why does transfer to an external drive slow sharply?

Many small files often transfer slower than a few large ones. USB connection, both drives and short-term write buffers also matter. New severe drops, interruptions or noises may indicate a fault. Packaging maxima are not guaranteed rates for every copy task.

What if an external hard drive makes clicking noises?

New recurring clicks with access problems may indicate mechanical failure. Avoid repeated starts or recovery attempts when data matters. Opening or shaking is unsafe. First consider backups and suitable professional assessment; recovery is not guaranteed.

What does the 3-2-1 backup rule mean?

Three data copies on two different media or storage types, with one at another location. This reduces the chance that device failure or local damage destroys every copy. Backups must be current and readable. Permanently connected external storage is more exposed to malware on the PC than a separate copy.

When is a full system backup useful alongside file backup?

File backup protects selected documents, photos and other files. A system image can additionally help restore a previous system environment, requiring appropriate software, storage and recovery options. They serve different purposes; an old system image does not replace an up-to-date backup of new files.

What should be clarified before repair if BitLocker requests a recovery key?

BitLocker encrypts the drive. Compatible Windows devices can enable device encryption automatically during setup with a Microsoft account, including Windows Home. Not every update enables it; changes to hardware, firmware or the startup environment can trigger a key request when protection is already active. Startup instability alone does not prove a BitLocker cause. Check early that the matching 48-digit recovery key is available and keep a separate copy. If automatic unlocking fails, files may remain inaccessible without the key even after successful hardware repair. A Windows password or PIN does not replace it. Encryption and required access are agreed before work; do not send keys unsolicited through WhatsApp or the contact form.

Guide: find your BitLocker key in your Microsoft account and keep an external copy
  1. On a trusted device, open your Microsoft account recovery keys. Sign in with the account used to set up the affected PC.
  2. If several entries appear, match the key ID. When a recovery screen is already displayed, its first eight ID characters help identify the entry. The ID is not the recovery key itself.
  3. Keep the complete 48-digit key with the device name and key ID, for example as a securely stored printout or a file on safely stored external media. A copy only on the encrypted PC is insufficient.
  4. Check that the copy is readable. Store it separately from the PC and protected from other people's access. External storage should not stay connected permanently.

If no entry appears, it may be in the account of the person who set up the device. For work or school devices, contact the responsible IT team. Do not reset or format pre-emptively when the key is missing; Microsoft cannot recreate a lost key.

How are browser data handled in an agreed backup?

Bookmarks, profiles and other browser data are not automatically included in every file backup. Some are local, others synchronised with an account. Saved passwords and sessions are sensitive. Scope is explicitly agreed; transferring every account and session cannot be promised indiscriminately.

How long can an unpowered SSD retain data?

It depends on memory technology, wear and storage temperature; no reliable period applies to every SSD and condition. One neglected SSD is insufficient for long-term archiving. Important data needs multiple checked copies and regular renewal of backups.

How are settings and files transferred to a new PC?

Files, programs, licences and settings are different parts of migration. Files can often transfer; programs usually need suitable installation and valid licensing. Copying the whole old system is not suitable for every new machine. Scope and sensitive account information are agreed beforehand.

How should data be backed up before handing in a PC?

Regularly back up documents, photos and other files externally and optionally to a suitable cloud service. Check that the latest backup is sufficiently complete and readable. Safely disconnect external storage afterward and keep it separately. Save the BitLocker key too; it does not replace file backup. If startup or storage is faulty, do not force a backup with repair tools; discuss the situation and a separate backup service first.

Security and account protection

How can I protect a PC against viruses and malware?

Supported current software, caution with messages and separate backups are foundations. Antivirus is one component and cannot prevent every attack. Unknown attachments, fake login pages and dubious software are particular risks. Backups protect against loss, not infection itself.

What can indicate viruses or ransomware?

Extortion messages, suddenly unreadable files and unexpected changes can be signs. Slowness alone does not prove infection. Do not connect backups or use sensitive accounts on a suspected device. Assess the cause before cleanup so important data and evidence are not lost.

What should I do about a ransomware demand?

Do not connect backup storage or regard payment as reliable rescue. Payment guarantees neither decryption nor deletion of stolen data. Further use can extend damage. Professional help and, where appropriate, reporting to relevant authorities help consider data, other devices and affected accounts together.

What is phishing and how can I protect myself?

It impersonates trusted senders or websites to obtain credentials or payments. Urgency and unfamiliar addresses are clues, but polished messages can also be fake. Verify through an independently known contact route. Do not provide passwords in replies to unexpected messages.

How can I manage strong passwords without forgetting them?

Long, unique passwords stop one leaked password exposing several accounts. A suitable manager can help. Do not send unprotected password lists. Additional sign-in protection and securely stored recovery options supplement protection for important accounts.

What does two-factor authentication achieve?

An additional factor makes access harder when a password is known. Depending on the method, a device or further security proof is needed. Methods differ in phishing resistance. Recovery options matter so losing a device does not lock you out of your account.

Is remote IT access safe?

It can help but grants access to the device and visible data. Grant it only to an explicitly agreed trusted contact. Unsolicited callers claiming Microsoft problems are a warning sign. Avoid banking or exposing credentials during access. This explanation does not promise an additional AdrianRepair remote-support service.

Connections and networking

Why does laptop Wi-Fi repeatedly disconnect?

Reception, interference, router or laptop hardware can cause it. A location-specific fault suggests surroundings; one device failing across networks points more toward the device. Drivers or antenna connections may also be involved. A faster internet subscription does not fix unstable reception.

How do 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi differ?

Under comparable conditions, 2.4 GHz often reaches farther but faces more competing devices. 5 GHz can provide higher rates but is more affected by walls and distance. Router, device and environment determine suitability. A fast internet tariff cannot compensate for poor Wi-Fi reception.

Is a LAN cable better than Wi-Fi for gaming?

A stable wired link often suffers less from interference and variable latency. Consistent delay can matter more than very high download rates. Wi-Fi can still work well with suitable reception and surroundings. A cable does not fix server or game faults.

Preparation, handover and transport

What information helps with a repair enquiry?

Manufacturer, exact model and a short description of the problem help the initial conversation. Include when it began and when it occurs. An existing photo of an error can help; do not show passwords or confidential information.

Should I mention earlier repair attempts?

Yes. Please mention whether the device has been opened, repaired or damaged by liquid. Software changes already made can also help diagnosis.

Must I open my device before sending it in?

No. Please send the complete device unopened unless we agree otherwise. Contact me before shipping so we can agree accessories, packaging and handover.

What if I can no longer make a backup before repair?

If the device will not start or its drive cannot be read reliably, we first discuss the situation. Do not attempt reinstalling or formatting to fix the problem. Backup or data recovery requires separate assessment; success cannot be promised.

Can a photo or video help with an intermittent fault?

An existing recording can help describe the behaviour but does not replace diagnosis. Please do not deliberately reproduce the fault or perform stress tests to make a recording. Avoid showing personal data or credentials.

Should I factory-reset the device before diagnosis?

Please do not reset it pre-emptively or delete data to prepare for repair. A reset can remove important files and evidence of the fault. First describe the problem; necessary steps and data handling are agreed beforehand.

How should a desktop PC be transported safely in a car?

Switch it off, secure it against movement and avoid pressure or impacts on case and connections. Heavy internal parts can be stressed by shaking; suitable orientation depends on construction. Do not leave it loose with hard objects in the boot. This is not a general recommendation to dismantle components.

Costs and scope

How much does cleaning a dirty desktop PC cost?

Work depends on construction, dirt and required maintenance. Published laptop or console prices are not blanket desktop tariffs. The suitable scope is confirmed before work. See Prices and services for published services. (Prices are indicative and may change; they are not updated continuously. Please confirm the current price before placing an order.)

How much does replacing PC thermal paste cost?

Work on only the CPU cooler differs from servicing graphics or other components. Construction and thermal material determine the work. Laptop-cleaning prices cannot automatically apply. See Prices and services; the actual scope is agreed beforehand. (Prices are indicative and may change; they are not updated continuously. Please confirm the current price before placing an order.)

How much does recovery from a faulty PC hard drive cost?

Backing up a readable drive differs from recovering inaccessible data. Possibilities and costs depend on damage; success cannot be promised. Backup tariffs on Prices and services are not blanket recovery prices. Separate scope and potentially specialist help must be clarified first. (Prices are indicative and may change; they are not updated continuously. Please confirm the current price before placing an order.)
